The joints of your upper extremities experience some of the most common repetitive stress injuries.
DID YOU KNOW?
The pain, numbness or tingling in your neck, arm, and hands can be a result of discs, subluxation of vertebrae, muscle spasms, trigger points, shoulder impingement, maligned ribs, joint pains, arthritis, or pinches nerves?
Shoulder pain is commonly found in patients with postural problems, repetitive stress such as working on a computer for an extended period of time, underlying arthritis and repetitive injuries from sports or manual labor. Inflammation in muscles and ligaments can pull on the bones of the joint causing significant stress and shoulder pain. Trigger points in the neck and upper back can radiate symptoms to the should. Misaligned ribs can compress nerves radiating pain into the shoulder and arm. They can also present as a sharp localized pain during inhalation.
Tingling in the hands and forearm often arises from compression of nerves in the elbow or wrist. Specific nerves responsible for sensation of these areas pass through and close to these joints. Repetitive strain causes inflammation of the ligaments causing compression of nerves.
Upper extremity pain is very common and can lead to decreased mobility especialy if its a result of minor injury or overuse. These body parts tend to become injured through chronic postural changes, athletic activity (especially contact sports), overuse from work-related tasks, accidents with machinery and accidental falls.
Diagnoses can include: Adhesive capsulitis (Frozen Shoulder), Rotator cuff injury, Muscle strain/spasm, misaligment of joints.
