Seizures

Seizures are a result of abnormal electrical activity in the brain. Early detection and proper care can help decrease the frequency and severity of seizures.

At HeadacheAwayMD, our board certified neurologist thoroughly evaluates and diagnoses the type of seizures you are suffering from to customize a treatment plan.

Seizures Q & A:

What are seizures?

Seizures are a sudden uncontrolled electrical disturbance in the brain. Depending on the location where the seizure begins and how far they spread we can determine the type of seizure. These disturbances can cause changes in your behavior,  thoughts, feelings, movements and in levels of consciousness. Having two or more seizures that are at least 24 hours apart without any identifiable cause is generally considered to be epilepsy.

What causes a seizure?

Seizures are more common than you might think and can begin at any age. Many factors can lead to seizures. Some common triggers are:

  • Strokes
  • Hereditary or from birth
  • Brain tumors
  • Closed head injury
  • Imbalance of electrolytes (minerals in the blood like sodium and potassium)
  • Medication side effects
  • Illegal drugs like cocaine
  • Flashing lights
  • Infection (meningitis)
  • other illness

How are seizures treated?

Any seizure activity must be evaluated by a Neurologist to discover the underlying cause and prevent future seizures.

At HA Brain & Spine Center our Neurologist conducts a thorough evaluation including Neurological assessment and examination combined with brain imaging and diagnostics to determine the underlying cause of seizure.

Treatment must be initiated in a timely fashion to prevent future seizures that can occur abruptly and even in dangerous situations. Anti-seizure medications help calm the brain to prevent it from "short circuiting". There are a variety of anti-seizure medications and Dr. H Walia works with every patient individually to find the medication that works best for their brain and with the least side effects.

Uncontrolled seizures or repetitive seizures can create a seizure storm known as status epilepticus where the brain continues to misfire and may lead to irreversible brain damage and even death.

If you have experienced symptoms similar to seizure please call HA Brain & Spine to get started on your road to recovery.
